Our Story

The Pencil Case is a fabulous, award-winning independent shop based in the heart of Cowbridge, South Wales.  Developed particularly with children and young people in mind, we stock a wide range of colourful stationery, gifts, helium balloons and greetings cards in both English and Welsh.  We also sell school uniform, ballet, gymnastics and dancewear and uniform for Scouts and Guides.

Owned by mum-of-two Sally Stephenson, The Pencil Case opened in March 2014 and has been a huge success.  We were delighted to win ‘Best New Start Up of the Year’ at the South Wales Business Awards 2014 and we were finalists in the ‘Best New Business’ category at the Cardiff Life Awards 2015.

Meet The Team

Sally

I have wanted to own my own stationery shop since I was 11 years old. I was 39 when I finally achieved my ambition and opened The Pencil Case! I love spending my days chatting to customers, having fun with my team, sourcing fabulous new stationery ranges from across the world and thinking of ways to make our shop and website even better for our customers – the team has got used to me regularly exclaiming “I’ve had an idea!”

Jane

I joined the team part-time in 2017 having spent many years working in primary education and am now work full time as the Assistant Store Manager. I am responsible for our shop floor and making sure it looks the best that it can do for when our customers pop in and see us! I love working in the shop – no two days are the same! The best thing about my job is when a customer leaves with a smile on their face and is genuinely thrilled with their new purchase.

Anna

I will be working in the shop over the summer holidays, I have just finished my A Levels at Cowbridge Comprehensive school and am starting university in September at Nottingham University to study Aeronautical Engineering! In my spare time I love to play cricket. I enjoy working in the shop because I get to see all of our lovely customers on a regular basis and help them find everything they need during the Back to School season.

Luke

I started working in The Pencil Case during the summer of 2022. I am part of the summer / holiday staff and enjoying being able to engage with my local community. I attended Cowbridge Comprehensive where I split most of my time between doing musical theatre as well as an array of sports. After finishing school in 2020, I have continued to work as a gymnastics coach and currently attend Durham University where I study Archaeology & Anthropology. I am enjoying the opportunity to work at The Pencil Case as I can help individuals in the area.

A random fact about:
&

What did we use before Erasers were invented?

Before erasers were invented, stale bread was used to rub out pencil. Try it yourself. Wait until the blue bits start to form on the crust, and the crumbs are ready for action then.
Or instead, just buy a rubber.

Shop for rubbers.
